St Mary’s Church in Stodmarsh, Kent

St Mary’s Church in Stodmarsh

The church is both gorgeous and unpretentious, consisting of just a single aisle and a bell turret from the middle ages.

The initial structure of the church was constructed during the Saxon period; however, the existing nave is of the late Norman period, and the chancel dates back to the 13th century but was renovated by Victorians about the year 1880.

One of the two bells is considered to be among the oldest church bells in England, and the X-shaped brace that is used to support the bell turret is a magnificent feature that cannot be discovered in any other church in Kent.

The rich history of the church is represented by the numerous crosses left by crusaders on the door to the church’s South West entrance. The churchyard was used for the final time for burials in the year 1939.

The community of the hamlet comes together on a voluntary basis to keep the church in good condition, and it has just recently been redecorated.
