St Mary Magdalene Church in Denton
There is a trail that leads from the court’s driveway to the St. Mary Magdalene Church, which is located south of the hamlet next to Denton Court.
The structure is somewhat tiny and contains a chancel, one aisle, and a little square tower on the west end. Its structure is made of flint, chalk, and mortar, and the chancel is unroofed.
The current church was mostly built in the 13th century, as seen by its straightforward form. Although the chancel arch and the lancet windows were updated later, the structure still has the usual appearance of a tiny early English village.
The interior is plastered, and panelling is located next to the pews on the North wall. Over the chancel step, there are two niches for rood screens. On a single pedestal, the font is made of stone.
Three windows can be found in the chancel, one of which is somewhat low. The majority of the glass is contemporary, although the stained glass above the priest’s entrance is older. The glass, which features a picture of Christ’s head, is meant to be a component of a constructed window.
The church includes a portico on its north side, where the benches are reserved for those who lost their lives during the war of 1914–1918.
At St. Mary Magdalene Church in Denton, the tower originally housed three bells. The Mediaeval peel was ruined when the middle one cracked and was regrettably sold in 1870.
Ordinarily held twice a month, Common Worship Eucharistic and New Day (non-Eucharistic) services include hymns, readings, a sermon, and prayers. The entire service lasts around 45 minutes. At the conclusion of the service, refreshments are offered.
A tiny but devoted congregation at St. Mary’s supports the church’s general operations and activities. 15 people attend on average each day of the year. Christmas, Easter, Harvest, Patronal, and Remembrance ceremonies draw larger crowds.
The congregation, which consists primarily of older people, prefers traditional services but also values the variety that the other services in the benefice offer. The New Day services have been very popular, and churchgoers participate actively in the worship.
